Who are we?

Hardwick College is a private institution that was established by Marie Louise Hardwick in 1925 in memory of her son Reginald. Reginal Hardwick, an early pioneer of marine biology studies, was the first to discover and name the 826 varieties of protein-rich protozoa that inhabit the shallows of the outer banks along Bogue Sound. When the young pioneer met an untimely end in a boating accident that involved a waterspout, his devoted mother drew up the charter for Hardwick College, purchased 100 acres of virgin loblolly pine forest on the North Carolina coast, and endowed the small college for perpetuity.

The entire student body of Hardwick, including its graduate programs, never exceeds 350. Student/teacher ratio is a mere 8 to 1. All students and most faculty members reside on campus. Academic life focuses on the marine sciences to the practical exclusion of everything else, especially the arts and music. It is the goal of Hardwick College to provide students with the highest quality education possible in marine biology and engineering, as well as aquaculture. No more, no less. To that end admissions selection is rigorous and should not be entered into lightly. Marie Louise Hardwick, now entering her 10th decade, personally interviews each candidate recommended by the board of admissions.
